OTTO WICHTERLE, Acrylic on canvas , 50” x 50” (127 cm x 127 cm)
I’m pleased to share that one of my silhouettes from the Czech Luminaries series, namely the one of Otto Wichterle, is now on display at the University of Chemistry and Technology (UCT) in Prague, Czech Republic. The painting is exhibited in the Department of Polymers, founded by Wichterle, the legendary inventor of soft contact lenses and a pioneer in polymer science.
Wichterle’s legacy is celebrated there in several other ways, including a newly renovated laboratory and auditorium dedicated to him.
This installation was made possible through a collaboration with Prof. Hynek Wichterle of Columbia University, NYC, and Prof. Jan Merna, Head of the Department of Polymers at UCT Prague.

Jiří Sopko's studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague operated for 26 years and played a key role in the transition from ideological teaching to free artistic education after 1989. It connected the last generation of students growing up under totalitarian rule with the first free generation after the Velvet Revolution.Teaching focused on the figure, color, and individual expression. Emphasis was placed on the medium of painting, but the studio also opened up space for abstraction, intermedia approaches, and experiments with new media. Modern avant-garde and postmodern approaches were reflected here. Color, intuition, and authenticity of expression played an important role. The exhibition Color of Time presents a cross-section of the work of students and graduates of the studio and maps its significance in the history of Czech art education after 1989. Among the graduates are a number of established authors of the contemporary art scene:Jiří Sopko / Jindřich Modráček, Igor Korpaczewski
